Cholera Update

Cholera has become a huge concern as we continue to watch more and more people in Haiti become sick from it. In late October, we held a meeting and went over the main points of how to prevent the spread of cholera with the staff. We have talked about the symptoms of cholera and instructed the staff that if they think that they, or one of the children, are having any signs of it, they are to immediately inform the nurse. We have also talked with the staff about how to take care of their families at home. They have been told of the importance of seeking immediate help and not waiting.

The nurse on staff prepared for cholera patients within the orphanage by gathering rehydration solution and making sure we have enough IV fluids on hand for both children and adults. We have posted signs in all the rooms and near the baby changing areas to remind everyone to wash their hands with clean water and soap - which we are so blessed to have. We have continually reminded the cooks and workers about hand washing as well as using hand sanitizer. We have added a hand washing station for all who enter the orphanage. A bucket of water with Clorox is at the guard station as guests enter the grounds. Each worker and visitor is required to wash in the solution.

We have been so blessed to not have any children suffer from cholera to date. Our staff remains healthy, as do their families. We continue to receive reports that are not nearly as positive as this one. We are truly being guarded by God's hand in this. Please pray with us that the Lord will continue to protect the children and staff from cholera as it continues to spread in Port-au-Prince.
