What's New

October Medical Mission Team

by Angie Koch

In October 2011 a team from Lookout Mountain, Georgia served at Maison for a week.  They brought a doctor, two nurses, and ten more sets of willing hands.  On Monday, the team held a medical clinic for Zanfan Lakay, a home for former street boys.  Tuesday, the staff of Maison and their families were served.  On Wednesday residents of a local tent city were invited to come and receive medical care.  This continued on through Thursday as well.  By the time the clinic closed on Thursday afternoon, nearly 500 people had been seen, with deworming medication and multivitamins provided for all, as well as whatever was needed to treat them for infections, coughs, acid reflux and heartburn, and a host of other ailments.  The team, along with their translators, provided excellent medical care for so many that otherwise would not have any.  During the clinic, Marie France Alexis and Brother Phanor shared the Gospel with those waiting to be seen.  There was much rejoicing when one woman accepted Jesus as her Savior.  Many were prayed for, and Gospel-centered literature was provided for those who desired it.

Niki Davenport, part of the team, organized a diaper drive to provide diapers for our littlest ones.  She used Best Bottom diapers, and invited her community and friends to help in the effort.  She delivered the diapers, and trained the nannies on the proper use and care of these amazing diapers.  Because of their quality, beds and clothes stay dry, reducing the amount of laundry created.  They help keep a more sanitary environment for the children without creating more garbage.  Nicki's Diapers also donated some of the diapers for this project.

Dr. Jon Risley provided training for the nannies and workers on child care, and answered many of their questions.  He was able to share a biblical perspective on child care, and helped put the focus on the positive things the ladies are doing to provide care for the children, while offering advice and suggestions for further improvement.

It was a busy week, and we look forward to more mission opportunities in 2012!

Water Filtration System

In late August 2011 Texas Baptist Men arrived to install a four-filter water filtration unit at Maison.  The goal is to reduce the overall cost of providing clean drinking water for all at Maison.  In a short time, the unit was installed, and we received training on how to use it as well as care for it.  Extra filters were provided, along with tools and cleaning materials.  The unit can provide five gallons of crystal clear, clean drinking water in less than a minute.  We are able to collect and store rainwater, which can then be filtered and used for drinking water!  This has helped to reduce our water cost.

New Bunk Room Coming Soon

Four volunteers built new bunk beds to be used for a new bunkroom.  The girls need a little extra space, so beds were constructed.  Red Tree Community Church in St. Louis, Missouri provided the funds for the painting and cleaning up of the room.  By early December, our oldest older girls will have a new (hopefully pink, per their request!) space to call their own.

Quisqueya Christian School Monthly Visit

by Angie Koch

The junior class at Quisqueya Christian School will be earning their service hours at Maison.  November 16 was their first visit.  Thirteen students planned activities in the areas of art, English-speaking, games, and movement.  The students divided up and some went to the preschool, kindergarten, and upper grade classroom.

The children made spiders with foam cups and pipe cleaners.  They painted pasta and made necklaces.  The preschool and kindergarten played with the parachute, and had fun running under the uplifted chute.  The older children played soccer (futbol) against the students from QCS.  We couldn't quite determine the winner.  J

Each month, the QCS students will return for a day to spend time with our children at Maison.  The students' goal is not to simply fulfill their service hour requirements, but to build relationships with the children at Maison.  One student, Daniel, played his guitar.  One of our children, Daril, loves to play the guitar as well, though he's still learning.  Daniel spent time teaching Daril guitar basics, and left his pick with Daril to use in practice.  It was wonderful to see these relationships begin to take shape!
